Matt Stutzman

4X Paralympian

Matt Stutzman competed at the Paralympics in 2012, 2016, 2020 and 2024, winning a silver medal in London in 2012 and a gold medal in Paris in 2024. Born without arms, Stutzman uses his legs and feet for most of his activities, including archery.

Stutzman was born without arms, although there is no underlying condition known to have caused this. His birth parents put him up for adoption at 4 months old. At 13 months old, he was adopted by Leon and Jean Stutzman, growing up in Iowa. Though originally fitted for prosthetic arms as a child, he found them cumbersome and today he lives without prosthetics.

Stutzman’s original interest in marksmanship began when he learned to shoot a gun, then taught himself to shoot a penny at 50 yards away. He took to a bow and arrow so as to join his father while hunting. Eventually it became his passion.

As a member of the 2012 U.S. Paralympic Archery Team, Stutzman won a silver medal in London. At the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games, he battled the No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3-ranked archers during single elimination and won a gold medal by setting a Paralympic Games Record by shooting a 149 out of 150 in the final match.
