Chaz Mitchell was appointed Chief Financial Officer and Commissioner of Sports & Entertainment for the City of Birmingham in November 2025. With 19 years of service at City Hall, he brings extensive leadership experience across both the City Council and Mayor’s Office. His tenure includes roles as Deputy Council Administrator, Director of Finance, Deputy Chief of Operations, and Chief of Operations.

In his current role, Mitchell oversees the City’s financial strategy, ensuring strong operational controls, effective administrative systems, and long-term fiscal stability. He also plays a key role in maintaining partnerships with corporate institutions, community stakeholders, and the broader financial community to support Birmingham’s continued growth and efficiency.

Mitchell has been instrumental in recruiting major sporting and entertainment events to Birmingham, including MLB at Rickwood Field, the World Police & Fire Games, NCAA Basketball Tournaments, Ballin’ in Boutwell, and the FISE BMX International competition, among others.

He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting and a Master of Business Administration with concentrations in Finance and Marketing from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Outside of his professional work, Mitchell enjoys traveling, CrossFit and spending time with his young son, Cristian, and friends.
